House Approves Corrections to the Coronavirus Relief Bill
On Monday, March 16, the U.S. House of Representatives passed technical corrections to the coronavirus relief bill, also known as the Families First coronavirus Response Act. The bill is yet to be passed by the Senate and signed by the president to become law.
Here’s what the proposed legislation requires:
- 80 hours of paid sick leave for government workers and employees or companies with less than 500 employees.
- Leave available to the following employees:
- Those who are or may be sick with COVID-19;
- Those who have to care for a family member with the illness; or
- Those who have a child whose school or childcare facility is closed (or whose child care provider is unavailable) due to the illness.
- Partially paid leave under Family and Medical Leave Act when an employee is unable to work remotely because of school or childcare closure related to coronavirus. This is different than the original bill with allowed leave for additional circumstances.
The above benefits are only available to individuals who have worked for their employer for at least 30 days. The bill would be in effect until Dec. 31, 2020.
