What You Need to Know About the Updated I-9 Form
The Federal Government’s I-9 Form has recently been updated with some important changes to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and security of the hiring process.
Here are some of the key changes that you should be aware of:
In-Person Requirements:
COVID-related remote flexibilities for verifying I-9 forms have ended as of July 31, 2023. By August 30th, 2023, any I-9 forms that were virtually inspected will need to be verified again in person. Any employers using E-Verify will be able to continue conducting remote verifications.
Updated Instructions:
The new form includes improved instructions to make filling out and navigating easier for both employees and employers. The updated form structure will provide more clarity on how to complete each section as well as what information is required.
Digital Accessibility:
Employers can now access and complete the I-9 Form completely digitally via E-Verify. This means employers can collect electronic signatures and digitally store the completed form for internal and governmental records.
Simplified Verification:
The updated I-9 includes a new clarified list of what documents are acceptable for employment verification. The list has been reorganized into three sections: List A (documents that establish both identity and employment authorization), List B (establish identity only), and List C (establish employment authorization only).
Important Steps to Take
- Download and use the latest, updated version of the I-9 form for all new hires and verifications.
- Ensure all employees have been verified in-person before the August 30th deadline.
- Securely store completed I-9 for any employees.
